How I would fix this movie
by Janet S. Tiger
***Warning - if you haven't seen the movies discussed here, and you don't want to know the plot twists/endings, stop now! This
page will be a little different than the rest of this website, but since
I have the room, I finally can tell the world how some of the movies I
see could be improved.
Everyone knows what I'm talking about -
you see a movie and it's almost good - with just a little tweek here
and there it might even be great. So I'm going to tell you what I
think could be improved on movies I have seen -if you want to comment, please contact me at tigerteam1@gmail.com.
I'm going to start with one I just saw, and add to this page as I see
new movies and/or remember movies I have seen and wished had been
better. If anyone reads this and wants to add to it, just e-mail
tigerteam1@gmail.com.
JERSEY GIRL - This
was a nice little movie, starting with a fairly common device - a
person(in this case, the 7year-old girl) reading an essay about her
family to the class. As we hear the words, we see what
happened. Which in some cases was much different than the words
we hear. The movie had a lot of funny parts, definitely not a
movie for kids, but adults. But at the end, actually close to the
last third, the device disappears - completely! To make this a
better movie, I say fix that missing device, put in a moment or two
with the girl reading something that ties it all together, closes the
loop. Result, a much better movie.
A WALK TO REMEMBER-
This stars Mandy Moore, and I was very surprised at what an
attention-holding movie this is - good for people of all ages, even my
11-year-old liked it, and my husband, which is a wide range
indeed. What was wrong with it? Not the acting - real people and
real situations. The plot worked consistently through to the
end. (I will not discuss plot as any mention gives away some of
it.) Only one problem - THE TITLE! What does this title
mean? I've now watched this movie several times and have no idea
what this 'walk to remember' refers to - if someone knows, please
enlighten me! Outside of a title you can't remember, I doubt if I
will forget this film.
JESUS IS MAGIC- Maybe
Jesus is, but Sarah Silverman is not always. When she hits it,
she has potential. But she needs a good editor - someone who can
pull her away from the edge before she goes over. Maybe she wants
to be marginal - loved by a small group rather than a large one.
If she wants to be a superpower, she will need to know the difference
between cutting edge , and cutting off her nose to spite her
face. I am not squeamish, nor is my son, but both of us went
-uggh at some of her stuff. The question for her is - 'how big do
you want to be?' Good luck.
NATIONAL TREASURE -
This was a fun movie that kids could watch and adults can enjoy.
There was nothing embarassing and in today's world of movies, that says
a lot - but I have an idea for the end that I think would have brought
this from 'fun movie' into the level of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
When they find the treasure, it is a great moment - but I think it
could have been more effective if there was a huge room that had
obviously been filled with treasure, and now all that's left is say,
one bunch of stuff in the corner of the room. And on a table,
there are books, and they see that, throughout the generations, the
treasures had been used to keep freedom and democracy alive.
There could be entries from Benjamin Franklin during the Revolutionary
War indicating that some of the greatest treasures had been sold to win
the war against England. Perhaps some great antiquities had been
sold to finance the Louisiana Purchase, Alaska, etc. And the
Civil War drained a lot, too, and the final words in the book - It was
all spent, because -freedom isn't free. (or something similarly corny)
This would also have allowed for a great lead in to sequels - as they
look for some of the treasures by following the clues in the records
left behind. Like RAIDERS, a link to the past and future
all at the same time. Plus there are still treasures - a win-win.
